Theodossis Demetracopoulos,Press Counsellor, Embassyof Greece, Ottawa STEYN OPINES that advanced democracies are populated by old people who've blown through their capital and are looking for young people to bail them out. He ignores the many old people whose life savings were blown away by greedy capitalist bankers and their million-dollar bonuses. It is typical Steyn to focus his attack on social expenditures instead.Andre Carrel, Terrace, B.C.Cuckoo for coca leaf
In "Vacation from hell" (Nature, May 24), Cathy Gulli was so swept up in the drama and horror of the two Canadians' vacation story that she decided to overdramatize coca leaf tea, referring to it as "cocaine leaf tea." The North American perception of coca leaves as a narcotic is completely misguided. First of all, cocaine leaves do not exist, and natural coca leaves are far from the illegal substance known as cocaine. I was in tiffanys in January of this year, and coca leaves were an integral part of the daily life of locals and tourists alike and are a completely natural and narcotic-free way of delivering energy, settling altitude sickness and many other common ailments. The image of coca needs to change, and disassociating its traditional uses with the toxic North American creation, cocaine, would be a good place to start.Rachel Fahlman, OttawaBlaming the victim
During my tenure as executive director at Distress Centre tiffany jewellery, which operated a crisis hotline for teens, I received feedback from girls who practise selfharm by cutting and burning, as described in your interview with Dr. Leonard Sax (Interview, May 10). Many of these adolescents indicated diat they found that physical pain obliterated mental anguish. The act of cutting or burning served the purpose of providing physical agony, which to these girls was easier to live with than the psychological torture they were enduring. While Dr. Sax cites research that suggests self-harm is linked to getting high on a release of endogenous opiates, there are other possible causes.Barb Litchinsky, Calgary
LEONARD SAX'S statement that young girls and boys view sex as a commodity is sensationalist. Why wouldn't they, in a world where comprehensive sex education in schools is not a guarantee? A world mat teaches girls to comply with- rather man questiondie status quo is the same one that causes them to be bom the victims and causes of dieir own low self-esteem. It is inaccurate to suggest that adolescent girls alone engage in self-destructive cheap silver jewelry. For boys, these behaviours might look more like binge drinking, compulsive gaming, or starting fist fights. A real gender expert would be interested in analyzing the damaging effects of gender stereotypes on both boys and girls, radier than further shaming girls for behaviours they choose in the absence of alternatives.
